First year undergraduate student accommodation at St Chad’s College is generally located along North Bailey in the centre of Durham City. Upper year students may also opt for a room at Trinity Hall which is just a short walk away.

St Chad’s is a fully catered College with all Bailey residents having a fully catered package of three meals per day included in their residence charge. Trinity Hall and Hallgarth Street offer self-catered accommodation for upper year students and postgraduates.

Accommodation on The Bailey is split across seven houses: Main College, Lightfoot, Grads, Langford, Ramsey, Queens and Epiphany. The history of these old buildings makes for beautiful accommodation full of character, with no two rooms the same! Within each house, students benefit from mixed residences of both first year and upper year students. This makes for an interesting and balanced community in which students from all year groups socialise together, learn from each other and build lasting friendships.

At St Chad’s our student accommodation is part of a stunning World Heritage site – right across the road from Durham Cathedral: it really couldn’t be closer! This ensures that we remain sensitive to the history of our buildings and, where possible, seek to maintain their character while offering modern student residences and facilities.

Around 70 % of our first year beds are in shared rooms (most are en-suite) with just a limited number of single rooms being made available each year for first year students (priority is given to those with specific medical/access needs). Double/shared rooms are a popular feature of the Chad’s experience and we firmly believe that there are many benefits to the experience of having a ‘roomie’, particularly in your first year! While for some people this may seem exciting, we realise that the prospect of sharing a room can be daunting for some applicants.
